Neanderthals R us
They cracked the Neanderthal genome, and it looks like we (Eurasians) have a touch of the tar brush...

Either during the overlap period in Europe, forty thousand years ago, or, more controversially, earlier in the Middle East, it seems there was some inter-species nookie. Raising the question as to whether they (we) were distinct species anyway.

I'm thinking how excited my dad would have been about this. And how much I regret not visiting Lascaux with him, when we could have.

Ali--you found me--hooray for you!

I thought that Neaderthals were already classified as sub-species of Homo Sapiens, Homo Sapiens neanderthalensis vs. Homo Sapiens sapien. Looking around it appears that this wasn't quite settled science as some taxonomies have them as Homo Neanderthalensis and others as Homo Sapiens neanderthalensis. At any rate, given how much they appear to have appeared like us, and given that men will have sex with sheep, it would be a surprise indeed if Sapiens sapien had NOT had sex with Sapiens neanderthalensis.

Question for y'all....as I am leaving the company, I will no longer have access to a blackberry and will need a personal replacement. I would like something that combines phone with email access and internet access would be nice...should I just iphone it? Or should I look at something else....

I currently am used to the real keyboard of a blackberry but suppose I could get used to a flat one.

Also, after much consideration, the new house will be apple/mac not windows based (despite currently having 3 windows pcs...my old one plus 2 of my mothers) and i am seriously considering getting an ipad with which my completely non-techie husband (he never mastered the mouse/eye/hand coordination thing) could use to read his a.m. newspaper and such. I figured I'd start with one for myself and see if he could use it...and if he's happy, then get him one of his own.

Looking for all opinions, insights, warnings, etc any of you would care to provide...
thanks!

Malibu, my friend mentioned in the other thread, loves and swears bt his iPhone...every time they issue a new model, he's got onr the very day it comes out.

I love my droid, but if I had macs i'd only get an iphone. Bob and Mose love their iphones, but there are. Several reasons I'm more happy with this one, but not if I had a mac (which mose does).

I seem to type equally bad on this and my bb, which I loved.

thanks...i'll give it a try.

a/v is the next big expense on the house.

it's been extremely hot so we are spending weekend nights there as the house has ac, but no a/v....interesting how i don't find i miss it that much...yet when i come home, the first thing that seems to go on is the tv...go figure.

Caveat on the latest iphone: bob's sister is getting dropped calls, even with the case. Bob went to get one yesterday and they don't keep them in stock. You have to order with a credit card--no debit--and wait 7-21 days. He decided to wait until the call drop issue is truly fixed or get something else.

thanks..i have been reading about the problem....

Ahaaa!

I just helped a visiting friend tether his iPhone to his (windows) laptop. Quite simple really. He had no idea it was possible, and it will be hugely useful to him (he's an interpreter/translator and travels a lot).

His original request was to plug into the net via an ethernet cable because his wifi wasn't working... one thing led to another.

I have nothing against Apple, but it feels good to defeat their lockdown strategy.

Happy 20th Birthday to the World Wide Web!

I'm a day late. On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee posted to a newsgroup outlining his idea for the WWW, including a link to the first webpage. Interesting stuff.

I have a new idol: he's an astrophysicist rock star named Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Anyone have an opinion on google and facebook's recent privacy changes?

7819. iiibbb - 1/27/2012 3:40:56 PM

only that they'll do what they please. i try to minimize exposure without being paranoid.

7820. wabbit - 1/27/2012 7:10:14 PM

I'm a "friends only" or "just me" and "don't even bother to search for me" girl. What used to bug me about Facebook was that every time they made an "update", you're previous settings were disappeared back to the initial FB defaults. They didn't seem to do that this last time, but I keep on eye on them.

I wonder if I have some kind of record for fewest FB friends while being a multi-year member. I'm barely into two digits worth of friends. Of course, I actually do know them all...

Google's change seems to be mostly about consolidation and CYA. Same rules apply for me, though. Keep a tight grip on your privacy.

I have 150 or so but most other than fam and friends are from my closed school.
