7817. arkymalarky - 11/1/2012 1:58:52 PM Finished!
Now to work toward running every other day. 7818. judithathome - 11/1/2012 10:08:11 PM Arks, why the ten day layoff? Were you sick or something? 7819. arkymalarky - 11/1/2012 10:32:53 PM Old-fashioned flu. Right before free flu shots at work 7820. concerned - 11/1/2012 11:40:41 PM I'm not sure if I really believe this. At work today, walking between buildings after a company tour, I saw a basketball hoop set up at the back of one building. Just for the hey of it, I tried to see if I could touch the rim from a cold start standing jump and I did! Not too bad for a going on 58 year old geezer, I'd say. Of course, I'd bet the rim was a couple inches short of 10 feet, but still, not what you'd expect from somebody less than five years from early retirement, wouldn't you say?
But I would credit any ability I have to still jump on something very simple. Ever since I was 17 years old, I would run up flights of stairs two steps at a time at full speed, and forty years later I'm still doing that. I figure as long as I do this, it establishes a minimum strength and speed that my legs have to maintain. Every hundred or so times, I might trip, but I always run in such a way that I will fall forward if it happens. 7821. arkymalarky - 11/2/2012 12:19:53 AM Wow! That's great! 7822. judithathome - 11/2/2012 12:20:22 AM That's amazing...that you can keep that up.
I was never athletic and of course, that hasn't changed at all...but Keoni was and still is...he has the "readings" (blood presure, cholesterol, weight, blood sugar, etc.) of a thirty year old and takes not one pill...at age 68. Goes to the gym 6 days a week and plays golf at least twice a week.
Our doctor is always amazed at the state of Keoni's health. 7823. arkymalarky - 11/2/2012 12:22:53 AM As are Stan and I. I've just always been a slug. One thing I like about running is that it takes up less time than walking. 7824. concerned - 11/2/2012 12:27:06 AM I can't say I'm in the best of health overall, given that I have intermittent stress induced hypertension brought on several years ago by abysmal managers and supervisors, but I'm still kicking.
I need to run more than once a week. I'm barely managing 3 miles distance now (outdoors with slopes) and I am starting to seriously think about getting something like a Nordictrack so I can run after work on weekdays. I'm just not really a morning person so I don't want to get up early every work day so I can run outside before work 3 times a week. 7825. arkymalarky - 11/2/2012 2:39:55 AM Amen. I will NEVER be a morning person. I have a treadmill, but my secret goal is to do a 5k 8500 ft up in Nederland next summer. 7826. concerned - 11/2/2012 5:41:28 PM Hi -
That should be challenging, considering the altitude. Are you going to do speed work or run up and down hills to prepare? 7827. robertjayb - 11/2/2012 6:21:02 PM "One thing I like about running is that it takes up less time than walking."
Is Arky channeling Yogi Berra?
7828. arkymalarky - 11/2/2012 8:00:53 PM Both, I hope. 7829. arkymalarky - 11/2/2012 8:01:31 PM Hahaha! Good one, Robert. 7830. arkymalarky - 11/2/2012 11:35:50 PM Con'd, I must add that I don't at all know if I could do such a thing, but it's something to shoot for. 7831. robertjayb - 1/16/2013 11:26:39 PM Will the public option emerge from limbo?
House Democrats on Tuesday introduced the “Public Option Deficit Reduction Act,” which would provide consumers the choice to opt into a government-run health insurance plan in the Obamacare exchanges.
It is sponsored by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who is on the Energy & Commerce health subcommittee, along with Energy & Commerce Ranking Member Henry Waxman (D-CA) and 43 other lawmakers.
By providing a lower-cost alternative to private insurance, it would put pressure on all insurers to lower their premiums in order to compete.
Citing CBO estimates, Schakowsky expects it to reduce the deficit by some $100 billion over 10 years by boosting competition among insurers and paying providers at Medicare rates.
(Talking Points Memo)
Of course this will be killed by the know-nothing tea-baggers, but it is Medicare for All and it is the way to go. One day it wiil happen. Time and demographics will fix it, along with the gun kerfluffle and other idiocies of the present day.
7832. judithathome - 2/11/2013 11:51:29 PM All the test results from the last few weeks were fine...I have degenerative spine problems but not what I feared which was metastisized bone cancer...she said there’s not much I can do for the pain but what I’m doing so....don’t have to go back until May. I’m very relieved.
She gave me the okay to swim this summer and to ride my exercise bike to build up stamina...said if it starts to cause more pain to back off but other than that, I’m doing great.
7833. Wombat - 2/12/2013 1:07:05 AM Glad to hear that it's not the worst-case scenario. 7834. arkymalarky - 2/12/2013 2:12:26 AM Hope the pain eases as it gets warmer. 7835. judithathome - 2/12/2013 6:21:20 AM It's so odd to be "in the place" where every little pang sends me spiralling into "worst case". Never used to be like that...quite the opposite, frankly. 7836. thoughtful - 2/12/2013 11:36:41 PM Glad to hear the good news J! It's hard but try not to let the aches and pains get to you as stress can be so damaging to the body, and you've already had enough of that. As my old friend used to say to me, don't borrow trouble.
You might consider trying mindfulness meditation for the back pain...it has been proven to be a great aid in living with chronic pain.
