8036. iiibbb - 2/11/2014 9:15:41 PM I don't have a lot of friends, and the ones I do have put as probably put as much stock in Facebook as I do.
Basically, I've never seen a ton of drama, and my friends almost universally don't post drama.
But also, I just don't react that much... in part thanks to the Mote, where I can come and vent if I've got something awful or political or politically awful to say and it disappears. 8037. iiibbb - 2/11/2014 9:18:04 PM I just read the average number of facebook friends for 18-20-something is over 500.
I'm well under 200.
I don't post much personal stuff unless it's supremely good news or terribly ironic. 8038. iiibbb - 2/11/2014 9:18:57 PM I love seeing what's up with people. Just found out about a friends engagement that I hear about until April because I don't live there anymore. 8039. judithathome - 2/11/2014 9:29:42 PM Yes, yes...everyone who is a fan talks about how wonderful it is for keeping up with friends...I think I am at a place in my life where I just don't give a shit.
I've turned into something of a recluse. 8040. arkymalarky - 2/11/2014 11:36:14 PM "Ilove seeing what's up with people. Just found out about a friends engagement that I hear about until April because I don't live there anymore."
that's what I miss most about it. With regard to the former student, what upset her was that they were gossiping. No one told her. They were talking about among themselves. And she read it. 8041. wabbit - 2/12/2014 1:52:01 AM I have a FB page, which is rarely updated, but I have it to keep in touch with a few long distance friends, a few cousins and a friend from college. I'm up to 30 friends (and that includes two who have put their accounts on hold and one known alias). I keep my politics off FB for the most part and filter most political stuff.
I don't know how people with 500+ friends keep up, but I'm sure they aren't reading anything I have to say. 8042. arkymalarky - 2/12/2014 2:44:45 AM a lot of them I think don't. It's like collecting pogs. I was appalled to find some kids talking about having Facebook friends they didn't even know. Last year a rumor went around that our principal was posing as a teenager just to spy on the kids on Facebook and they were telling each other don't friend so and so and she wasn't even on Facebook. That rumor floated around and whoever the poor kid was trying to find friend everybody was getting declined. I guess that's what he gets for trying to friend people he doesn't know. Of course kids are on to the next thing now and adults are hooked. I'll probably go back to it in a limited way in a year or so. I want to be on this job a while without that added dimension first. I wouldn't have wanted to be on it during the job change. Still too many hard feelings between districts. 8043. alistairconnor - 2/14/2014 1:28:10 PM About half my FB traffic is political... Green stuff, and I don't care who knows it. In fact, I can't think of anyone, among my FB friends, who would have a problem with it. I'm lucky, I suppose (especially with my family! the rest not being entirely luck)
I used to have entirely separate France and New Zealand fb universes, but now there's a surprising amount of crossover. Part of it is having bicultural children, but part of it, I think, is FB itself, and associated media. Being in touch with old friends and their children, who end up in Lyon as a travel or study destination. That sort of thing. International networking is a huge plus. 8044. alistairconnor - 2/14/2014 1:31:56 PM iii, I will definitely check out ad blocking. And spread the idea. 8045. Trillium - 2/14/2014 3:45:07 PM I just found out that a playmate from childhood passed away suddenly. Her daughters took her Facebook page as a way to notify friends.
I wasn't offended. I am grateful. I'm still trying to find a way to make the memorial service, or to at least bring something as a token for her daughters. I loved that person and she was a great neighbor/playmate, even though I've scarcely seen her over the years. I appreciate her daughters getting the word out, and Facebook is a great tool.
I know a teacher who uses it to keep a weekend social group updated. The kids get together to do good things in the community, like home repairs for elderly etc. 8046. arkymalarky - 2/14/2014 4:42:05 PM it does a lot of great things. But when literally the day after Sandy Hook rural people who I like otherwise are railing about how they don't need to use this as an excuse for gun control, that's why I got off the bus. 8047. arkymalarky - 2/14/2014 4:44:32 PM and my family is very political too, in fact I'm very political, but that's not why I go to Facebook. Get a political page if that's what you want, but I don't like having my newsfeed clogged up with sermons. 8048. arkymalarky - 2/21/2014 12:27:01 AM anyone here know anything about setting up user accounts permissions / restrictions in Windows 7? 8049. judithathome - 6/10/2014 6:43:53 PM Best New Career: Cartographer! You'll Certainly Be Kept Busy!
It used to be wars, Communism and colonialism that kept atlas illustrators on their toes. These days, though, their biggest headache is global warming.
For instance, when the National Geographic Atlas of the World is published this coming September, its renderings of the ice that caps the Arctic will be starkly different from those in the last edition, published in 2010, reports National Geographic. That reflects a disquieting long-term trend of around 12 percent Arctic ice loss per decade since the late 1970s—a pace that’s picked up since 2007. This comparison from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, although not the one used by National Geographic, should give a sense of how much skimpier that Arctic ice cover has gotten.....
8050. judithathome - 6/17/2014 6:52:04 PM 10 Scientific Ideas That Scientists Wish You Would Stop Misusing
...Many ideas have left the world of science and made their way into everyday language — and unfortunately, they are almost always used incorrectly. We asked a group of scientists to tell us which scientific terms they believe are the most widely misunderstood. Here are ten of them.... 8051. arkymalarky - 6/20/2014 2:56:47 AM I do not like being my parents' tech support. 8052. arkymalarky - 9/26/2014 12:36:28 AM will someone please explain iPhone worship to me? I don't get it. Stan needs a new phone and I just don't think the iPhone price reflects its features. 8053. judithathome - 9/26/2014 5:45:13 PM Which of the new ones has problems with bending? I saw three of them on the news yesterday...bent when someone sat down with it in their back pocket.
Frankly, I don't want anything more than a way to call 911 if I am stranded or if the power is out at home.
Of course, I am ancient and shaking my cane at these new-fangled inventions...why can't people just send an engraved invitation to a party? And leave a nice calling card in the tray in the foyer when they drop by? 8054. iiibbb - 9/26/2014 9:38:26 PM The big one bends.
It's not just iPhone worship... but I likes me a cool phone.
However, the worship comes from the integration. 9 times out of 10 things just work (or at least set up) a little easier with an Apple.
That being said, I don't think I'd ever spend money on it. I prefer Android. 8055. iiibbb - 9/26/2014 9:39:43 PM Why people are surprised that a 5-6 inch flat piece of aluminum might bend if you put it in your pocket next to your strongest body muscle... or trying to have it support your body weight....
People really are kind-of dumb.
