iii, I will definitely check out ad blocking. And spread the idea.

I just found out that a playmate from childhood passed away suddenly. Her daughters took her Facebook page as a way to notify friends.

I wasn't offended. I am grateful. I'm still trying to find a way to make the memorial service, or to at least bring something as a token for her daughters. I loved that person and she was a great neighbor/playmate, even though I've scarcely seen her over the years. I appreciate her daughters getting the word out, and Facebook is a great tool.

I know a teacher who uses it to keep a weekend social group updated. The kids get together to do good things in the community, like home repairs for elderly etc.

it does a lot of great things. But when literally the day after Sandy Hook rural people who I like otherwise are railing about how they don't need to use this as an excuse for gun control, that's why I got off the bus.

and my family is very political too, in fact I'm very political, but that's not why I go to Facebook. Get a political page if that's what you want, but I don't like having my newsfeed clogged up with sermons.

Best New Career: Cartographer! You'll Certainly Be Kept Busy!

It used to be wars, Communism and colonialism that kept atlas illustrators on their toes. These days, though, their biggest headache is global warming.

For instance, when the National Geographic Atlas of the World is published this coming September, its renderings of the ice that caps the Arctic will be starkly different from those in the last edition, published in 2010, reports National Geographic. That reflects a disquieting long-term trend of around 12 percent Arctic ice loss per decade since the late 1970s—a pace that’s picked up since 2007. This comparison from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, although not the one used by National Geographic, should give a sense of how much skimpier that Arctic ice cover has gotten.....

10 Scientific Ideas That Scientists Wish You Would Stop Misusing

...Many ideas have left the world of science and made their way into everyday language — and unfortunately, they are almost always used incorrectly. We asked a group of scientists to tell us which scientific terms they believe are the most widely misunderstood. Here are ten of them....

I do not like being my parents' tech support.

8052. arkymalarky - 9/26/2014 12:36:28 AM

will someone please explain iPhone worship to me? I don't get it. Stan needs a new phone and I just don't think the iPhone price reflects its features.

8053. judithathome - 9/26/2014 5:45:13 PM

Which of the new ones has problems with bending? I saw three of them on the news yesterday...bent when someone sat down with it in their back pocket.

Frankly, I don't want anything more than a way to call 911 if I am stranded or if the power is out at home.

Of course, I am ancient and shaking my cane at these new-fangled inventions...why can't people just send an engraved invitation to a party? And leave a nice calling card in the tray in the foyer when they drop by?

8054. iiibbb - 9/26/2014 9:38:26 PM

The big one bends.

It's not just iPhone worship... but I likes me a cool phone.

However, the worship comes from the integration. 9 times out of 10 things just work (or at least set up) a little easier with an Apple.

That being said, I don't think I'd ever spend money on it. I prefer Android.

Why people are surprised that a 5-6 inch flat piece of aluminum might bend if you put it in your pocket next to your strongest body muscle... or trying to have it support your body weight....

People really are kind-of dumb.

Too funny Judith!

I agree, 3i. I have a moto x and it's the best phone I ever had. it is voice activated, has a very safe and effective drive mode, is physically great and pretty and has been very dependable. it's my everything device. best since my first blackberry. wit a rural life, people to keep up with, a job to keep up with and ninety minutes on the road every work day, the iPhone just didn't cut it. I tried to love it. I just couldn't.

but I just told Stan forget it. he's getting on my last nerve. he can keep his pos 4s.

Well never mind. I did it. Navy blue leather back, metallic dark gray accents with name engraved, gorgeous. I will have major phone envy. https://www.motorola.com/us/motomaker?pid=FLEXR2

The motox is tempting because I think you don't have to wait for them to release new versions of android? It this true.

I've been eying the HTC one, but am willing to give a long look at motox

8063. arkymalarky - 9/27/2014 4:09:27 PM

yes it is.

try the motomaker. I loved picking my design. I played around with it for days before I bought mine. and if you go to a store and hold it, the curved back is great. there are also neat accessories too like a turbo charger and a keychain charging pack. the x gen2 is really nice. I may turn into supergeek and get the watch and earpiece eventually.

the thing that made me so mad at Stan last night was that his was designed and ready to go and I guess deciding what email to attach it to was one choice too many and he couldn't decide. that's why he's always been an iPhone person. he doesn't like deciding. ;>
