anomie, I agree, boring. I think most of the opening ceremonies are boring. I vaguely remember thinking Sydney was ok, but overall, too much "teaching" going on. I am very familiar with her work and have seen it in various places.
Personally, I do not understand why she is tauted as one of the greatest photographers in the history of the world.

I haven't read any cohesive reason as to why she is so in demand right now. I read one review that said that her latest body of work proves that she still has it.
This is from her collaboration with MAC make-up. Not exactly how women want to look using that product line.
Yes art is subjective, but would YOU pay one million dollars for this?

Only the marketplace, which reflects a combination of factors. It's roughly the same set of phenomena that have yielded Andy Warhol as "one of the greatest artists of all time", or indeed Madonna as "one of the greatest singers of all time." I doubt she will be more than a footnote to art history within 30 years, let alone a century into the future. Certainly, I find Cindy Sherman entirely uninteresting.

Sure her idea of being both subject and photographer (while creating pictures that reflect mulitple photographic genres) is interesting, but I wonder how and why it became so important.
I'm just wondering out loud.
Personally, I find Tom Chambers' work much more intersting, symbolic and photographically complex.

I can't believe MAC accepted this as a comment on their work..clearly, she is saying women who are overly made-up with their product look like clowns...and apt interpretation, if you ask me.
The willing public will buy anything they think is trendy...last night I saw the work of an artist who does watercolors of scenes from WalMart...actually, they were more interesting than this woman's photos.
8904. bhelpuri - 3/9/2013 8:53:17 AM I wouldn't spend five bucks on Tom Chambers prints/artwork - they're no more alive or interesting than Sherman's. If he's taken seriously by museums + the marketplace (and a cursory look at his bio suggests he is) it is just one more indication that the Western art world is collapsing in on itself through sheer inertia.
Here by contrast is the work of Dayanita Singh, who now describes herself as a bookmaker working in photographs , and consistently moves into new terrain as an artist. FYI, in a unique and historic development, she + Ai WeiWei will occupy the German pavilion at the Venice Biennale this year. If I were throwing more money into the art world (which I am now expressly forbidden to do by my wife and my conscience both) I'd be snapping up her early work wherever it comes to market (which is rarely if ever). 8905. Art is so subjective, and for me, at the very lowest level, the artist must be able to create something I cannot.
