Liberty U. started small in 1971, but now claims 11,000 students on-campus (over 90,000 students including their on-line classes). US News & World Report claims that Liberty is expanding and thriving while comparable institutions struggle, so perhaps it is worth paying more attention to what they are doing.

I can't google up the incident I described, but while googling I found a lot of other news about Liberty.

Liberty U. recently had a bizarre shooting incident where a student from Lubbock, Texas, was killed after attacking a security guard with a hammer. The details raise more questions than answers.

A gay former student by the name of Brandon Ambrosino wrote an article for the Atlantic about his experiences with Liberty: "Being Gay at Jerry Falwell's University". Funny and interesting article, with specific professors and counselors mentioned by name.

Under duress, Falwell recently allowed Liberty's debate team to debate both sides of the abortion controversy. Yeah, they have had trouble with censoring opposing viewpoints.

A lot of people find it difficult to consider, let alone discuss, any viewpoint that challenges their strongly-held opinions...so it sounds like Liberty is making some progress towards free speech. That's a good thing -- and should probably happen in more places

Being Gay at Jerry Falwell's University

As a teenager I never would have said this,, but Dolly Parton is so cool! I love her song in that Dior fragrance commercial with Charlize Theron.

8959. judithathome - 12/1/2013 7:28:25 PM

There's a song in that commercial? :-)

THAT woman is so stunning!

Thanks for the info on Liberty....I will have to go a very long way to accept it as a real "university" if they are just recently allowing BOTH sides in debates...the whole point of going to a university, aside from making your resume look better, is to open your mind to new and different things...world views with which you might disagree.

Frankly, anything Jerry Falwell and his ilk are involved with seems tainted by bias to me...rigid bias.

Going to see The Rivals this afternoon...can't beat those 1775 plays!

It has one of Keoni's favorite characters in it: Mrs. Malaprop.

It was FABULOUS!

I was at the University of Texas two weeks ago and there was a memorial dedicated to the Americans killed in Yemen by drone attacks. Ummmm.....

I haven't seen the Dolly Parton Dior commercial. I have seen the Princess Grace and Marilyn Monroe Dior commercial. (?)

Trillium,

I am with you on movies sensationalizing racial struggles, especially now.

It's interesting that "Gangster Squad" had an entire sequence rewritten and taken out of the movie because of what happened in Aurora, Colorado, yet they're still pushing for movies with racial stereotypes and that can incite violence.

I'm sure some Hollywood big name will get behind a Trayvon Martin biopic next.

And, Spielberg is a nice guy and the consummate professional from everyone I know who has worked with him.

I haven't seen the Dolly Parton Dior commercial.

She's not IN the ad, she's singing the song that plays in the background.

I don't think so...

Wow. I had looked it up and saw dp's name in the results and assumed it was her. I didn't click on any off them. She's still cool though.

Can't get the link to work...who is it, then?

I guess Dolly is little "raw" for Dior, come to think of it.

But who knows...that could be a whole new level of marketing for them.S

8973. Jenerator - 12/5/2013 12:02:34 AM

Dolly seems like a nice person. I agree with you!

8974. arkymalarky - 12/5/2013 12:17:54 AM

she's also very smart and an excellent songwriter. I didn't realize that when I was growing up, but listening to covers of her songs by other people as an adult I'm giving her another listen. She's got a whole lot of talent and brains and she gives back, which I always admire.
