How does that look for people?

961. PelleNilsson - 2/2/2000 4:02:34 AM

CalGal

Got you. We push the bar to the right and only the wretches with 640x480 screen will suffer and there can't be many of them.

What do your reckon max 'n' is in width='n'? (I know, I caould view source, but I'm lazy.)

962. CalGal - 2/2/2000 4:06:50 AM

The Mote image is about 640, because I match it up on the front page. I'm at work, so I don't have time to find the biggest size we can handle. Still, I think it's a nice idea. We can start the thread with a post on instructions for the max width.

963. cmboyce - 2/2/2000 4:14:32 AM

I have no idea what size window I have (nor what you are talking about), but I might as well be the man-in-the-street and observe that I cannot see the butterbar and have to scroll horizontally to even know it's there. Just reporting; I've no ideas about it.

964. cmboyce - 2/2/2000 4:15:30 AM

And while I don't like to post and run, I must do it again, because I have to pick up the kid, at school. See you later.

965. CalGal - 2/2/2000 4:22:08 AM

CM--what size screen do you have?

966. PelleNilsson - 2/2/2000 4:30:29 AM

cm is clearly one of the wretches. But he can scroll right so he can locate "Home" and get out of the thread. When circumstances permit, cm, you should consider an upgrade from your current museum pieces.

967. CalGal - 2/2/2000 4:31:48 AM

I just wanted to make sure it was only happening on the museum piece. If so, I agree with you--we can put in a warning.

I wonder if Sakonige would consider hosting the thread?

968. IrvingSnodgrass - 2/2/2000 8:42:02 AM

CM might be like me, since he uses a Mac... I keep my screen for the Mote to about 2/3 of the regular screen, so I can have windows tiled for other purposes. At 2/3 of the screen (which is set at 832 x 624, but can be reset to a higher or lower resolution), I have to scroll in this thread right now, but it works fine for all other threads. With a Mac, the browser window does not automatically take up the full window... it opens at whatever size it was at the last time it was used, and can be set to any size.

IOW, the window can be set to handle this thread, but it seems sort of pointless to lose flexibility only so one can look at this thread.

I Protest!

/s/ 640x480 wretch

970. Candide - 2/2/2000 9:00:51 AM

I have a Macintosh Performa 5260/120 and I hate your wide screen.

I'm definitely a wretch.

971. sakonige - 2/2/2000 10:29:02 AM

Smaller, narrower images load faster, too.

972. sakonige - 2/2/2000 10:42:25 AM

CalGal,

Which thread? I think I've lost the thread of the conversation.

I'm sorry I can't help out right now, but I expect to have more time in April. Let's see what's happening then. I might enjoy hosting a discussion of some aspect of the Americas. Including a focus on Spanish language usage could make a thread on the Americas more interesting and worthwhile.

973. CalGal - 2/2/2000 10:57:16 AM

Relax, everyone. I'm not changing the format. We're just experimenting to see if what the max width is we could have with a thread consisting only of images. Sounds like 640 is too wide for most.

974. soupisgoodfood - 2/2/2000 12:38:24 PM

The EM dash.

Learn it. Love it.

975. PelleNilsson - 2/2/2000 3:35:33 PM

Sakonige

In the meantime, we can use the technique of linking the small picture to the larger original. Look here for an example.

The syntax is

(a href="ImageSource")(img src="ImageSource" width=300>(/a)

Replace the round brackets with angled ones.

width=300 gives the size shown in the example. You can use any value up to 425.

976. Uzmakk - 2/3/2000 1:01:47 AM

How about this for a print advertising slogan--

Chat so good its news.

977. Dantheman - 2/3/2000 1:04:47 AM

Uzmakk,
Not that it's my call, but it sounds good. It's needs an apostrophe, though.

978. Uzmakk - 2/3/2000 1:11:27 AM

Quite right, Dantheman.

979. Uzmakk - 2/3/2000 1:12:33 AM

Ofcourse, we will fancy up the typography a bit.
