Friday remediation would have to be compulsory.

1808. Ms. No - 2/11/2016 11:43:26 PM

My idea was to have students go 8 - 4:30 with Wednesdays off so teachers have a day mid-week to grade, call parents, lesson plan, research, etc. Make the 57-minute classes 72 minutes and call it all good.

1809. arkymalarky - 2/12/2016 12:49:51 AM

My Idea was 9 to 2, academics only, if you want extracurricular then you can go before nine or after two. Friday is for remediation and games if you don't have to remediate.

The stupidity of the eight period Day is what's really getting tiresome on the teaching end, and putting kids in too many diverse subject areas. I started with a six, and imo that was about right.

1811. arkymalarky - 2/12/2016 12:59:38 AM

I also liked the block schedule, but that has drawbacks.

1812. arkymalarky - 2/12/2016 1:01:24 AM

Hour left in my 70th PTC. I must say, I always enjoy them.

1813. arkymalarky - 2/12/2016 3:54:08 AM

By games I meant sports and other competitions. My school has been state chess and archery champs. They shouldn't have to miss school or compete on school nights. We have lots of Thurs night games.

This evening our superintendent (a Delight guy) brought us pizza as he always does on parent teacher conference, & I ate it in my room with my two best friends from Delight who are now working where I am. I'm going to retire, maybe next year and maybe year after next, but I will so miss that. I thought I had given it up when Delight closed, and I'm so glad that I didn't.

I agree that there are too many specific content areas. I'd like to see a much more integrated and experiential curriculum where we don't treat subjects as if they are totally separate from one another all the time.

1816. arkymalarky - 2/14/2016 1:12:04 AM

It's not just that, but a lot of it is no longer useful. If you want a vocational track, that's one thing. To have so many courses, including many that don't provide a practical curriculum, yet take up huge space on the schedule, making it hard to arrange needed courses, is another. It's gotten way out of hand.

1817. Ms. No - 2/14/2016 1:36:44 AM

I agree. Can I nominate you for Education Czar?

1818. arkymalarky - 2/14/2016 1:49:22 AM

Ha! I'd lead a reign of terror robespierre wild blush at. Heads would definitely roll.

1819. arkymalarky - 2/14/2016 1:52:24 AM

When we had so many exchange students, some from Eastern European countries had as many as fourteen courses a day, and you could tell. They knew a little bit about a Lotta nuthin.

1820. arkymalarky - 2/14/2016 4:14:43 PM

Stan would be worse. I'd be his Danton. He says axe 90% of the coaches and a bunch of admins and require all kids to go to public schools. If the rich have to use them they'll be fixed. He wants all competition to be intramural and football to be outlawed.

1821. Ms. No - 2/14/2016 7:57:20 PM

Okay, Stan gets to be Co-Czar.

1822. arkymalarky - 2/18/2016 2:17:39 AM

Had my last ever eval today. I need to journal my last year of teaching, but unless I get less tired I don't know that that will happen.

1823. Ms. No - 2/18/2016 11:47:34 PM

I've gotten remiss about documenting my teaching experience as well. I have less to complain about, and even if I didn't, I have no time to post about it. Maybe I'm mellowing in my old age.

Actually, I was just thinking yesterday - and for some weeks now - that I really really want to find a viable alternative to the classroom.

Of course, I say that, but I'm too tired to actually look into anything else. Yeah, I should look for an adjunct college position, or check out consulting companies, or research how to get into curriculum writing, but all I really want to do when I'm not at school is binge-watch Banshee and read books in between working on my apartment.

remainder of post is headed over to The Good Life.

1824. arkymalarky - 2/19/2016 6:10:56 AM

In 35 years, I've never journaled about my job. The main reason I'd like to do it now is because when I quit, I'd really like to be like able to go back and read it. I Still love teaching So much, but too much driving and life issues I haven't posted about, but bottom line is I'm going to have to retire to deal with family and other things. It will kill me to quit, but I'm afraid it will kill me if I don't. And I need time to be there for people who need me. I can put them on the back burner another year or two, but no longer.

1825. arkymalarky - 2/19/2016 6:18:40 AM

I've come to really dislike the idea of pretty much any other job in public ed besides teaching. It's just so much crap any more, and not enough pay. To make it Worth it. I liked the Work I did with Rural School and Community Trust, but it got tireSome feeling like I was being Directed. I liked helping my friend Who is an ed researcher, but that's volunteer work. ;)

1826. arkymalarky - 2/19/2016 6:24:58 AM

I've gotten more cynical about the system and happier with the job over the last I'd say 15-20 years. Not just with nclB, but a lot of converging things. My supt friend told me he thought he and I had worked in a golden age of public ed. I agree, but it didn't last long.
