Changing the subject from Hell to high school:

(Okay, not that much of a change . . .)

New Wage-and-Hour regulations affect scholastic hiring?

"Fearing that it will end up owing hourly employees overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), Akron School District (OH) has decided to stop offering such employees supplemental contracts to coach or act as advisers for extracurricular activities. According to Patrick Schmitz, deputy director of legal services for the Ohio School Boards Association, hourly employees with supplemental contracts are not exempt from the FLSA, which means they could be entitled to overtime. . ."

My wife, who works part-time at my daughter's high school and additionally serves as a class advisor, was told today that she might have to be replaced by a salaried teacher as class advisor because of FLSA concerns. It won't be a financial hit if that occurs - the large number of hours she spends in that role divided by the flat-fee stipend she gets for that additional duty equals what an Southeast Asian orphan gets paid per hour to make sneakers - but she'd like to continue.

The real hit if this is in fact the law will be with regard to athletic coaches. Several coaches or assistant coaches are full- or part-time non-salaried employees ("classified employees") who work more than forty hours a week during the time their sports are in season. They are also presently paid a flat-fee stipend for serving as coaches. Under this law, they'd have to be paid time-and-a-half, based on their "regular" wage, to coach.

The apparent source of this concern is the new FSLA regulations adopted in April and effective July 1. I thought the net effect of these regulations was that many people who formerly were eligible for overtime pay would LOSE the legal right to be paid overtime. It doesn't seem correct that people who formerly weren't entitled to overtime would become entitled to it under Bush administration regulations.

And if this is the law, it is an ass. I can see the need to protect employees against being coerced to "volunteer" for extra flat fee assignments, but coercion is not a problem in this setting.

I agree, Ms. No. I haven't seen any pics of Res or Wodes, (but don't let that stop you from sending them, you two,) but if they are anywhere as lovely on the outside as they are on the inside, woo hoo. (Yeah, even Res has his moments of being nice. : ) Sorry A-5, but the 5 bucks you gave me not to tell only lasted for so long.)

Some of Ohio's ed policies make me feel a little less awful about AR's trends. Misery does love company.

We are contract workers. Coaches, sponsors, contract to do extra work for a set amount. If the state wants to say that, to be consistent they'd have to do it for business managers and anyone else on salary who goes above and beyond the job description whenever it's needed.

Our contract covers what we do with the phrase "and other duties as assigned."

Can people volunteer to do those things?

My picture is a big deal or something?

What the hell. This is from five minutes ago. I refuse to shave for this sort of thing.

Personally I don't think that this picture adequately conveys my, you know, Satanic nature, but at least you all can put a face to the words.

Woden's in charge of all pictures with her in them, so you'll have to be content with this one -- but as Marjori said, I'm a lucky guy.

Definitely Satanic.

Nice photo. I particularly like the way you've managed hide the little horns under the artfully arranged hair.

Psh. That was easy. The hard part was hiding the wings.

That wallpaper, that is the work of the devil alright.

10980. angel-five - 8/18/2004 5:06:35 PM

Nobody has any love for the wallpaper.

Including me, but since I'm moving soon, I can't be bothered to change it.

Say, did anyone notice we're close to a millennial?
